MIRAMAR. Raymond Lully’s dream

Miramar
MIRAMAR
Raymond Lully, 13th century philosopher, mystic, poet, theologian and missionary, had a dream: to create on Mallorca a college devoted to teaching Arabic and other Oriental languages to prepare Franciscan monks to convert the infidels to Christianity with their words. And this was the request he submitted to James II, who helped him to found the Miramar monastery in 1276. Located in one of the loveliest spots on Mallorca’s coastline between Valldemossa and Deià, it is a veritable balcony over the sea from which Lully wrote some of his works.

The passage of time would bring a new figure to Miramar, Archduke Louis Salvador of Austria (1847-1915), the author of the most exhaustive work ever written on the Balearic Islands, Die Balearen. Enamoured of Mallorca, he purchased the former possession where the Miramar monastery was located. At that time, the boundaries of the estate extended as far as the Teix summit, towards to east as far as Son Marroig – a possession that the archduke also bought – and to the west it included the lands and vineyards of S’Estaca (today owned by actor Michael Douglas and his ex-wife, Diandra).

Today Miramar houses a museum where you can find documents and works of art related to Lully and the archduke, as well as a map room, a sculpture by Tantardini and a partial reproduction of the inside of Louis Salvador’s boat, the Nixe II.
